The Disc Golf Streak, Day 1734 (Cedar Grove, dubs)

Day 1734

Josh has been busy re-designing Cedar Grove for the past six months and this weekend he deemed it sufficiently completed to have us out to throw it.

It's still very similar to what it was, but it is now 20 holes, the holes overall are shorter (worked things back inside of property and easement lines), it is still extremely technical and there are a ton of low ceilings.  Probably the biggest change is that he dug a pod on the property behind his house . . . and that comes into play on Holes 18-20.

Was a beautiful day to throw, cool and comfortable.  Danny & I teamed up to take on Josh and Kyle in dubs.  The match went back and forth throughout and after 20 holes we ended up tied, each of us shooting a 60.

I (we) thought it was a lot  of fun.  The holes are short but there are so many where you have to play smart to get a par and birdie is not realistically achievable.  Others may dislike that but I love it.  Lots of practice hitting lines, throwing golf shots and scrambling.

My favorite hole was #19 -- throwing off the pond dock and through the double mando.  It was just fun (and challenging) to throw.

Tee signs have been installed and they look great and there were tons of finishing features all over the course ranging from a teepee basket enclosure to a basket inside of a tree to tires planted up with flowers and handmade cedar fences and backstops.  Long way of saying it was nicely finished off with little touches here and there that make it a visually pleasing course.

I thought about it after the round -- why did I enjoy throwing it so much? -- and came to realize (that good company aside) it's because the course presents all the challenge of good disc golf without requiring you to wear yourself out throwing long distances.  Sometimes you don't feel like throwing a course full of 600' holes in which case you're usually left with course options that are too easy like Winton or Woodland but Cedar Grove let me enjoy all the challenge of a difficult course without making me tired or taxing my arm.  Other than utility shots I didn't throw anything faster than a Leopard3 today which frankly was a lot of fun and a great change of pace.

Great day, great fun casual competition, great course.

[Pic below is the Heart Island hole which is challenging.  Can't see it too well below but the island is essentially a 20' wide heart at 200' away (uphill).  Doable but none of us quite made the island.]

Edited to add our conversation from last night:

Danny: "I finally figured out what to do on long drives today."
Me: "Really? What?"
Danny: "Chew gum."
Me: "Huh, really? Chewing gum? Does that give you energy to you throw farther? Make you focus and throw more accurately?"
Danny: "No, it keeps me from getting car sick."
