The Disc Golf Streak, Day 1139 (Armco)

Day 1139.

We decided to try a new course today so we went to play Armco (Warren County Parks up near Lebanon).  They installed a new course a few months ago . . . but we weren't in a big hurry to try it since we had heard it was long and open.  And those reports were correct.  This was our 47th course visited.

Hole 1's "tunnel shot" . . .

Nice view of the lake walking between 15 & 16 . . .

For what it is, it was mostly well done.  Teepads were nice and the signage was good (the baskets are old junky ones from Turtlecreek's course).  Enough of the holes were well designed, but frankly it's the kind of golf that neither of us enjoy -- mostly just long, open throws.  Very boring golf.  We scored well enough (+2 playing dubs) considering it was the first time we'd played and it was hard to see/find many of the pins from the tee.  Since we couldn't see them rather than walk hundreds of feet to catch a glimpse we just threw shorter fairway drives.  Luckily it wasn't crowded on a Sunday morning (neither the park itself nor the course was crowded -- we didn't see any other disc golfers out there) because a bunch of the holes would have been unsafe to throw with more park patrons and vehicles around.  There were a few holes through the woods but I'm assuming they aren't finished because at least one (15) had no lines to the basket at all and some other holes had nasty rough that resulted in us just playing super conservative golf so we wouldn't waste our time looking for discs in high weeds (we didn't).

I doubt we'll go back and play it again -- if we wanted to play this style of course we'd just go to Mt Airy.  I doubt it will see usage levels like those of Turtlecreek (the now defunct course that Armco replaced) since it is so long and open and multi-use (i.e. crowded).

Anyway, it was a nice day out (50's and sunny) and we did have fun playing the course.  I expected to be tired after playing one of the longest courses in the area but we really weren't.  I guess the elevation changes weren't great enough to really tire us out.

We also visited the pro shop afterward -- there are a couple racks of discs in the golf course pro shop -- but didn't buy anything since we need another disc like we need another hole in our heads . . .
