The Disc Golf Streak, Day 3169 (Winton, new layout)

Day 3169

Winton was redesigned and given new teepads and baskets this winter and is finally open for play so we decided to head out there and give it a try.

We've thrown many, many rounds at Winton since it's the easiest and shortest course in Cincinnati (more or less) so we were eager to see what was done.  Because of all those rounds we are pretty nostalgic for the old design -- it was a Steady Ed original design from the early 80's and had been untouched (for good and bad) for 40 years.

Overall we thought the new layout was really well done and a huge improvement.  Much safer feeling from errant throws, gets into the woods more, has new large really good teepads and new baskets to replace the relics that had been there for decades.

The only fault I can come up with is that it is no longer really good for beginners - not a problem for us, the new layout is way better and more enjoyable -- but not a course I'd take new players to.  A few of the fairway lines seemed a bit narrow or unfair, but we only played once and I'm sure it will break in some and seem different a second time around.

It was terribly muddy, but that was to be expected since it rained all weekend.  It will probably be fine once things dry out in the summer.

Not much was re-used.  A couple holes were recognizable but had different pad or pin locations.  Each hole had two pin locations so baskets can be moved from time to time, but mostly left/right rather than short/long.

Overall a huge improvement that makes the course safer, gives it a better woods feel, makes it more fun/challenging . . . much like Woodland was a huge improvement in those departments.

But it was kind of weird feeling excited about grabbing a birdie or two here and there at *Winton* since it was always super easy where getting anything less than birdie on half the holes was disappointing.  I didn't keep track, but he said he shot 1-under . . . and was not disappointed with that for the first time through.

This was Hole 12 . . . one of the most similar ones on the course.
